Hurry up and wait

I had forgotten how much of a journalist's life can be spent waiting for the phone to ring.

My interview with the Business Journal went really well: So well that they want me to write an 800 word (roughly 27 inch) sample story for them by 10 a.m. Friday. I decided to get a head start and really focus on the piece today, which means I had a ton of messages left by 11:30 a.m.

Now starts the waiting game.

I wanted to try to get in an 8 hour day on this piece today. It's part of my get-back-to-work-mentality plan. But when you're working from home, there are SO MANY distractions! Like blogging, walking the dog, laundry, planning dinner.

How do you keep focused at home, when not being home isn't really an option?

Hey Regan,

Here is my tip about working from home, which I don't too much, and I know there are plenty of other people that we both know, that could give a better advice, but any way. whooo, that's really long winded. I do recommend to start early in the morning, just like you would your regular day, let's say at 9 am. Then work for few hours and plan a lunch time. Either noon or 1 pm. This way the day has structure. During lunch, you should eat, plan dinner and walk the dog, and so on. You should stay away from the lunch things, for the rest of the day, until you are done with your work day, let's say 4:30 pm. It also helps me a lot if I shower and get dressed. This way, I really feel like I'm at work. Best of luck.
